12 Rounds is an action-packed thriller that drives a detective relentlessly through the streets of New Orleans in answer to 12 bizarre punishment rituals that look like devil’s challenges.
The detective played by John Cena has his hands tied. The challenges emanate from an internationally known terrorist who has kidnapped his girl friend and is holding her hostage to wreck vengeance on Cena. Cena has to continue playing every daredevil game he has been asked to play, juggling courage, fear, risk, time, and every other factor that action thrillers are required to throw into the ring.
The movie suffers from a surfeit of stunts. And the stunts are some sort of travesty of daredevilry, and might disappoint even stunt lovers. A sample stunt is one that involves driving a fire truck across the city and bulldozing property. His adventures around a brakeless car and the medical helicopter are the only ones that give some respite.
Kidnapped girlfriends seem to be Cena’s routine cross, the way he was seen caught in a similar situation in his earlier movie ‘The Marine’ as well.

The haunted-house concept is nothing new in the movie world. In this new movie based on the old idea, director Peter Cornwell is exploring it from another angle by trying to incorporate it into a cancer patient’s pain.
The house, that the family of three – made up of the patient and his parents – occupies, has a past as a funeral home and center of séances. The saving grace of the place for them is that it is near where the teenager patient is getting treated. The shadowy past throws its evidence around in the form of blood and gore and eerie sounds and shadows. But the suffering teenager is not sure how much of it is real and how much is medicine-induced hallucination, till he takes a co-patient into confidence.
The problem with the movie is that somehow its spookiness angle does not gel properly. Despite its PG-13 stamp, it looks more like a family saga, or one that derives its strength from human emotions. Horror movies have to horror-driven, or they may end up as senseless travesties.

In his latest offering ‘Knowing’, where a series of phantasmagorical events are triggered off by the discovery of a time capsule in an elementary school, Nicolas Cage has come out with a sui generis species of a movie. Never mind that nothing in the movie makes any sense, but the scientist in the movie whom Cage portrays has to stop the apocalypse predicted in the time capsule. Other predictions in it have already happened and he has a moral obligation to prevent the coming catastrophe. So he forces the viewers to put up with crazy conglomerations of invading aliens and blood-curdling disasters for two hours.
If terrifying people with images of future destruction was the aim of the movie, he has succeeded in it. After movies like ‘World Trade Center’ and ‘Next’, on the aftermath of 9/11, there seems to be a delusion that mass doom is the true to life scenario.
Grading a movie cannot add even an iota to its credibility. The surreal stuff, which the movie spewed out, deserves some bizarre grading. Moviegoers would have been better off without the spooky adventures that Nicolas Cage submitted them to.
