This latest offering from Paramount Pictures has taken 3-D animation technology to such levels that one may wonder whether live actors could soon become redundant. The unique animated characters of the movie straddle the worlds of science fiction and folk tale.
The main characters are Susan, who gets mutated into a 50’ monster when a meteorite struck her on her wedding day; Dr. Cockroach, a scientist with the head of a roach; B.O.B, a brainless, glutinous mass of a creature; Insectosaurus, a 350’ insect larva; and Missing Link, an ancient ape-fish combination strongman.
All of them are tagged monsters and remain incarcerated in a segregated facility, providing enough visual entertainment for the audience. Their time come when aliens invade the earth. The beleaguered president, on the advice of his general, releases the so-called monsters to fight the invaders. The president and his general are two of the few live characters in the movie.
The whole cast of the invading alien and his self-cloning army is also 3-dimensional, making the Armageddon at the end also a visual delight with heightened 3-D effects.

At a time when corporate gullibility has struck the stratosphere with companies taking taxpayers’ money to give golden bonuses to its employees, people may not get entertained by corporate immorality, even if it comes in the garb of a romantic comedy. But what saves the day for director Tony Gilroy is the movie’s powerful lead pair of Julia Roberts and Clive Owen.
The duo are acting as corporate spies who have infiltrated two rival manufacturing giants. Despite being in love, because of the type of their work, they can’t believe each other. And there is no linear story line, with the past intruding into the present too often in reminder games. Again, but for the star couple, it might not have been bearable. And the product they were tracking turned out to be nothing, though in the process the audience gets a peek into the minds of the success maniacs heading the corporations.
A good movie, if all you need is relaxation. It is a Julia Roberts movie all the way, and her wonderful chemistry with Clive Owen. Still, as Julia’s partner in comedy, George Clooney might have fared better.

Though not directed by Apatow himself, the movie I Love You, Man is a lovely Apatovian potpourri. The two lead characters played by Paul Rudd and Jason Segel create enough situations to leave everyone in splits. The story is that Rudd is too good and gooey a guy that he has no male friends to be his best man at his wedding, a problem he hopes his brand new chum Segel would solve. Segel is ready to do the job but he believes that as part of the bargain he has to molt his new friend out of his geekdom by giving him some practical exposure to manliness.
Rudd has the charm to be an ideal man for a woman, but not the required credentials to be a chum of a manly man. The audience gets enough of coarse humor as Segal goes about masculizing Rudd with the necessary accents and acts. The story is based on this single thread of getting trained in a natural finishing school for men. But the thread is long enough to be woven into hilarious patterns as Rudd learns his lessons to manhood the rough way.
